TROJAANSE WIJVEN
Scenography for Dewi Reijs
Trojaanse Wijven is a modern adaptation of the play Trojan Women written by Euripides, one of the masters of Ancient Greek literature. Dewi Reijs interlocks the epic war story with the contemporary immigration stories from Europe.
While the fact that women are a commodity, captured as booty in wars, traded as goods, still exists on earth 2437 years after Euripides; Added to this was climate destruction and migrations forced by the exploitation of the capitalist global north. When the concepts of refugee and water come together today, the first word that comes to mind is “death”.
The five women on stage live in the Netherlands with origins from five different corners of the world. As they float over a piece of land in the smoke of wars, one ending and the other beginning, they question their past and future. On the other hand, they refuse to be victims and call us to face the realities of our day.

Trojaanse Wijven; a profoundly unique experience
“… Actress and theater maker Dewi Reijs comes with a modern adaptation of Trojan Women by Euripides with stories of today. They are stories that touch you, from women who know what they are talking about. The actresses come from Syria, Palestine, Somalia, Algeria, Morocco, Surinam and the Dutch East Indies. Each with their own story about their origins, their past and what it was like to have to get used to the Netherlands; but also what it is like to live with a foreign appearance in the Netherlands. How do you adapt, without losing your own identity or denying yourself?”
